My first ever 24 hours backpacking.
Touch down Suvarnabhumi Airport... It was about 1am local time and me and my mate Ben had finally arrived in Thailand. I should probably mention that me and Ben have know each other for most of our lives and always kept in touch but we hadn’t actually spent any proper time together for nearly 15 years since he moved to Liverpool so this was a totally random getaway for both of us!
I had found a 10 day tour of Thailand advertised on Facebook through a company called Ultimate Travel, after a bit of research I decided it was legit and reeeally wanted to go. I sent Ben a message out of the blue asking if he wanted to go on an adventure and it took him about 0.3 seconds to reply “Yes, When, Where” and that was it. 8 Weeks later, backpacks bursting we landed in Bangkok.
The airport was massive and we were both wired from the flight with about half a brain cell between us. Being unusually organised for me I’d arranged a transfer to our first hostel, mainly because I knew it would be the middle of the night and I find the whole bartering for taxi’s thing a bit intimidating.
We were staying in the Rambuttri House Hostel one street away from the madness of Khao San Road. It wasn’t the greatest but it was clean, the staff were really friendly and I can’t fault the location. Still wired from the flight we dumped our packs in our room and headed straight out for one drink before calling it a night… Like I said, me and Ben hadn’t seen each other for years so one beer turned into a black out and one random photo on my phone at 6.20am of him riding a broom outside a 7/11 like Harry Potter… The next day we were meant to head out to explore Bangkok but after waking up at 4pm with both me and my pack covered in Chang (which I’d fallen asleep clinging onto) we didn’t get far…
After dragging ourselves out we met the group we’d be spending the next 10 days with. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer bunch of misfits! We all clicked from day one… It could have had something to do with a mad night out on Khao San road and a ridiculous amount of Sangsom (*Thailand Tip* Do NOT drink buckets and then eat scorpions) but my first ever 24 hours backpacking was amazing and it was honestly the best thing I have EVER decided to do.
