Finding The Lost City

September 22, 2016

Where: The Lost City is high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains above Santa Marta, Colombia

When: I visited in February 2016 with the peak tourist season being December – April

How Much: I booked my trip with Expotour at their office in Santa Marta as recommended by the tourist info in my hostel for 450,000₱ (£120/$155). This trip can be booked in advance online but I found it was cheaper to book when I was there.

How Long: I booked a 4 day trip starting and finishing in Santa Marta, although you can book longer or shorter tours I found the 4 days the perfect amount of time.

Know Before You Go: With its river crossings, mud, dust, mosquito's, steeps climbs and descents and venomous creepy crawlies.. The trek to Ciudad Perdida is not for the faint hearted and a reasonable level of fitness is needed to fully enjoy. I completed the trek in trainers but i would recommend a decent pair of walking boots and definitely pack extra mosquito soap!

Day 1: Leave the Expotour office in Santa Marta for the 2 ½ hour jeep ride to El Mamey where you have lunch in a local restaurant before heading off on a 3 hour hike to the first camp.

Day 2: An Early breakfast before heading out to camp 2 for refreshment and a swimming stop. 3-4 hour afternoon hike to camp 3 for the second night.

Day 3: 6am start up to the Lost City where you spend the morning exploring before heading back to Camp 3 to collect your pack and start the 3-4 hour hike back to camp 2 for the third night.

Day 4: Hike back to camp 1 for a swim and re-fuel followed by the final 3 hours walk back to El Mamey for a well-deserved cold beer and your final meal with the group before the bumpy jeep ride back to Santa Marta.
